After launching our new web portal three weeks ago, we now celebrate our new MathCityMap App Update! In the following we present the new features:

New features:

  • Our onboarding introduces the system with just a few clicks: With the help of our explanations the start into the world of MathCityMap is now even easier (photo 1).
  • The author area is now available: With the MathCityMap app, registered users can create tasks while on the go via smartphone or tablet. Here it is possible to either create a complete task analogous to the web portal or to prepare a short draft which can be edited later at any time (photos 2 to 6).
  • The chat in the Digital Classroom was extended: Now it is also possible to send voice messages or pictures besides classic text messages. This allows teachers to support learners even better and more specifically via chat.

The new app version can be downloaded here for Android (Google Play Store) or here for Apple iOS. We hope you enjoy the new functions!

The MathCityMap idea:

With the MathCityMap app, students, teachers and individuals can rediscover their own environment from a mathematical perspective: Mathematical hiking trails, so-called maths trails, can be followed all over the world with the help of the MathCityMap App. After all, there are a multitude of mathematically interesting objects everywhere!

MathCityMap combines the editing of mathtrails with the possibilities of modern technologies such as GPS localization for orientation purposes, a support system through stepped hints and a feedback system. Mathtrails, once downloaded, can also be used in offline mode. The app is available in eleven different languages, including German, English, Spanish, Italian and French.

On our website you can become active yourself after a free registration and create your own tasks and mathtrails.

Webportal & App are developed by the working group MATIS 1 at the Institute for Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. Due to funding within the framework of the Erasmus+ projects MoMaTrE and MaSCE³ we can provide the app free of charge and free of advertising as well as conforming to data protection regulations.

This week, we had the opportunity to present MathCityMap at a teacher training at Rhodes University in Grahamstown in South Africa.

Matthias Ludwig followed the invitation of Prof. Dr. Marc Schäfer (chair of mathematics education, Rhodes University) and accepted the challenge to present and test MCM in South Africa.

The area of ​​Rhodes University offers a variety of objects which are suitable for good MCM tasks. Three routes with 6-7 tasks could be created. On Monday, the theory of outdoor mathematics and the basic idea of ​​MCM were introduced. On Tuesday, almost all of the 50 teachers were able to install the MCM app on their Android smartphones. Some tried it with their Windows phones, but of course it did not work. None of the teachers owned an iPhone! Afterwards, it was time to solve the tasks, but it turned out that many participants were not able to navigate on a map at all. Some had not activated the GPS localization and searched the right direction. Thanks to the support of Clemens and Percy, we found the reason quickly.

It was a pleasure to observe the teachers during solving the tasks, and to see the joy when the MCM app rewarded a 100-point response and a green check. Overall, the concept of “doing mathematics outside” was completely new to the South Africans.

There was also a discussion about units, conversions and modeling. Especially the modeling process is relevant for MCM since one has to translate reality into a mathematical model to solve the tasks numerically.

MCM at WDR

After our presentation in Münster at the beginning of the week, the WDR created a short video about our MCM app. A student tested the trail in Münster and did quite well. Have fun watching. Click here for the video.

At the 3rd of March, the MCM-App became one year old. At first, all the best to it! We would take this opportunity to draw an interim conclusion.

Development

The app did not always look the way as it does today (see cover picture). It was a long development process until the app satisfied the demands. To do so, we presented and used the app in numerous events and let the feedback enter the further development. Through this, functions such as the guided tour (start from a selected task), the orange interval and first gamification elements were included. Meanwhile, the app arrived in its 14th version under the designation “1.82”. Nevertheless, we still have further ideas, which we want to implement in the future.

Prospects

We are pleased with the iOS-version of MCM, which will probably appear in the beginning of April. Further, in nearby future, it should be possible to create GPS-based tasks (e.g. to position oneself in a right angle from two points). More, task templates for objects which can be found often in the environment (e.g. advertisement pillars) should facilitate the creation of tasks extremely. The supplemental project “MCM-Control” should allow teachers to follow the learners’ progress and intervene if necessary.

Numbers

The MCM-App for Android has been downloaded and installed over 500 times and has an actual evaluation of 3,8/5 stars (we look forward to further evaluations!). Now, the MCM web portal includes over 1000 tasks, which are created and revised by about 200 registered users. The tasks can be located in different areas, e.g. Hamburg, Potsdam, Rhein-Main area, Erlangen, Wetzlar, Münster, Saarbrücken, Würzburg, Mannheim, Lyon (France), Semarang (Indonesia) and many more. In the past year, we offered ten events for teachers to get to know outdoor mathematics with MathCityMap.

It will be interesting to see what can be expected for 2017.
